Birth Re-registration Booking Questions

Please note that we can only re-register children who were born within the City of Manchester.

If your child was born outside of the City of Manchester then you will need to re-register with the Office that covers that area. The City of Manchester does not include Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, or any of the other local authority areas in Greater Manchester.

If your child was born in a hospital then there are currently 3 maternity hospitals within the City of Manchester: St. Mary's Hospital (Manchester Royal Infirmary), North Manchester General Hospital (Crumpsall) and Wythenshawe Hospital.

If the birth took place at home - or elsewhere - then Council Tax for that address would need to be paid to Manchester City Council - Map of Manchester. You can use the link to the following section of our website to check if you are within the Manchester City Council area

To be able to re-register your child we strongly recommend you complete the appropriate paperwork, before you attend your appointment. The forms are available to download using the following link - Birth Re-registration. It also includes further information on the re-registration process. Please note that in some cases it may be necessary to refer your application to re-register to the General Register Office, in which case a second appointment will be necessary in order to complete the process.

Please note that if you have previously attended Manchester Register Office to make an application to re-register your child, and your application was referred to the General Register Office (GRO), please do not book another appointment to complete the re-registration until you are advised to do so by the General Register Office or Manchester Register Office.

There are two types of re-registration form:

  • Form LA1 - For parents who were not married or civil partners at the time of birth, but subsequently have got married or had a civil partnership. More information can be found on the Government Website (LA1).
